Jag’s Background

Jag is a triple qualified surgeon with both a medical and dental qualification and a Doctorate in Philosophy. He has also completed his dental vocational training and has worked as a Senior House Officer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in both Bristol and London. He then went on to complete his basic surgical training in General Surgery in East London which included experience in accident and emergency, general medicine with endocrinology, palliative medicine, urology, breast surgery and colorectal surgery. Jag started his dental implant training in 2002 with short courses and has subsequently had further exposure to surgical aspects of implant dentistry during his higher surgical training. This training includes the placement of implants in the entire facial skeleton as well as dental implants and the placement of implants in facial deformity, traumatic facial injury and cancer reconstruction. He is able to offer both surgical and restorative aspects of treatment from single teeth, to multiple teeth and bridges, as well as full arch reconstruction and implant retained dentures. Awards

Jag has an interest in innovative technologies in head and neck cancer treatment and recently obtained the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Presidents Prize for his work at Imperial College London looking at iKnife technology in head and neck cancer. This technology allows real time detection of cancer tissue by analysing the smoke generated for surgical cutting instruments such as laser and cutting diathermy. He hopes to develop this technology in a clinical trial with robotic surgery to improve the accuracy of the removal of head and neck cancers.

Jag started his research training with a Medical Research Council funded intercalating degree (Bachelor of Science) in Cellular and Molecular Pathology. He then went on to complete a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Liverpool in which he studied mechanisms of cancer spread and genetic predictors. During this period he was awarded three Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) of England Research Fellowships.

Jag is the only UK surgeon to have obtained the college (RCS Research Fellowship), specialty (British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons/Facial Surgery Foundation-Saving Faces Research Fellowship) and faculty (Faculty of Dental Surgery, RCS Research Fellowship) research fellowships.

He has also completed the National Cancer Research Institute Head and Neck Clinical Studies Group Clinical Trials Fellowship and is actively involved in setting up and recruiting patients for heads and neck clinical trials with the role of head and neck lead for the local clinical research network in Kent Surrey and Sussex.
